Mahatma Gandhi said – “Be the change you want to see in the world”. Here is one doctor who fits right into Gandhi jis quote.
This Pune doctor Ganesh Rakh wanted to do something from his end to innovatively address the problem of female foeticide. So he stopped charging fees for delivering girl child. The birth of a girl child is celebrated in the hospital by distributing sweets and by treating the mother and child for free. Till date, the hospital has given free treatment to 135 women and their newborn girls.Imagine how intense the problem of Female Foeticide/infaticide in India is – Dr Rakh says “The toughest job in a hospital is to convey the news of the death of a patient to their relatives. I found that to convey the news of the birth of a girl child was just as tough”.
One of the biggest problems in India is the female foeticides (abortion because the gender of the fetus is female). In the times when medicine is looked as a profit making business by more people, this compassionate doctor responds to the female foeticide problem in his own way. He not only doesn’t charge any fees to deliver girl child, but his team also celebrates with the family by distributing sweets.
